Tips for 4x4 in the mud?

I have a 1997 Mitsubishi Montero (3.5 V6 automatic) with Goodyear Wranglers (235-75-R.15). What are some tips for driving in the mud. Not deep mud, just real soft mud. Should I keep on the gas, follow previous tire tracks, etc...? Any tips are helpful because I admit I know a little but not everything about off-road driving cause I'm only 17. I do good now, just wanting to see what could help me out.
