Should new inmates leave their shoes with their lawyer when reporting to jail?

I have to report to county jail to begin serving a six month sentence later this month and a friend of mine, who is also my lawyer, has agreed to accompany me when I self-report. He thinks that I should take off my shoes and any valuables, and leave these with him once we arrive to the male reception center, and only wear cheap sweat pants, a plain t-shirt, white socks and tighty whities. He said that this would probably speed up my processing, show the officers that I am fully cooperative, humble and respectful, and it would also make sure that nothing valuable is lost or damaged in prison. So would it be a good idea to take off my shoes when I enter the jail's booking facility, give these to my lawyer to take with him, and report for booking in my socks?
